ANCHORAGE, AK (Alaska’s News Source) - Two storm systems are moving toward Alaska, bringing significant impacts to coastal regions starting Saturday night and continuing through Tuesday morning.

The first system is already affecting the Aleutians, with a second area of low pressure pushing into the Gulf of Alaska and Southeast. Coastal areas should prepare for wet and windy conditions that will intensify through Sunday.

Wind Gusts Expected to Reach 45-60 mph

The central and eastern Aleutians will experience the strongest winds, with gusts reaching as high as 50 miles per hour from the west-southwest through Sunday at 10 p.m. A Wind Advisory is in effect. Adak is already seeing gusts to near 60 miles per hour.

Southeast Alaska, particularly from Sitka south, will see wind gusts up to 45 miles per hour overnight Saturday into Sunday.

Kodiak is already experiencing gusts near 56 miles per hour from this storm.

Heavy Rain Expected, Especially in Southeast

Rainfall totals vary significantly by region. While Anchorage and the Valley have seen minimal rain, coastal areas are taking the brunt of both storms:

  • Yakutat: Over 1 inch today
  • Kodiak: 2 inches and climbing Saturday afternoon
  • Seward: Another 1 inch of rain expected in the next 24 hours
  • Southeast Alaska: 2.5 inches of rain in the next 24 hours, with totals reaching up to 5 inches in Juneau by Tuesday morning
    • Sitka and Ketchikan: Up to 2 inches by Tuesday morning

Light rain showers will move into Anchorage and the Mat-Su Valley on Sunday, with chances increasing especially in the second half of the day. Additional showers are expected Monday and Tuesday as the storm systems continue to track north across the state.

Temperatures Warming Despite Wet Weather

Despite the wet conditions, temperatures are slowly warming as warmer air moves in from the south. Overnight lows Saturday will remain above freezing in Southcentral, with Anchorage and Wasilla dropping to 35 degrees, Kodiak at 43 degrees, and Southeast Alaska staying even warmer—Juneau at 42 degrees and Ketchikan at 49 degrees.

Sunday highs will reach the mid-50s in Southeast Alaska and the mid-40s in Anchorage and Fairbanks. By midweek, temperatures will rebound to the low 50s across Southcentral, with overnight lows staying in the mid-to-upper 30s.
